The Grand Angkor Wat Temple

Finally I have the time to update again, have been so busy and caught up with work. Yuck. Recently I went to Cambodia for 12 days. It was one of the best moment in my life. Pay a visit to the Angkor Temples, the largest Hindu temple complex and the largest religious monument in the world. It was so surreal. Rich history from its mighty kingdom to its tragic genocide under the Pol Pot communist regime. Nevertheless, Cambodia is growing rapidly now. There are many cafes and pubs around the city area. Many tourists too. I have more sketches with more stories to come. So stay tune! :)

Angkor Wat Temple

I’m not sure how to begin my story. When in Siem Reap, my friend and I hired a Cambodian taxi driver. To our surprise, his English is really good. He has a strong British accent which he picked up the from his customers. Many locals thought that my friend and I are Japanese. It’s funny because we know that we don’t look like Japanese at all. Oh ya, there’s another story. After touring the temples in the day, I went to the Night Market for some shopping before pampering myself at a small spa near our guesthouse. The very next morning, on my way back to Phnom Penh, we drove pass the Night Market and guess what? It was all burnt down! So shocking. So poor thing :’(

I have been thinking of giving the design industry a short break lately, but after going for the WAF event, it’s kind of giving my passion back a little. Maybe I should just find design company that suits me… hmm…

Painting the ‘Trees, in the Round’ by Pep Ventosa

What scrolling in tumblr for hours can do! Showered me with inspiration and overflowing ideas haha (lebay)..
I came across a post on one of Pep Ventosa’s photographs which really caught my eyes and so I painted it. It’s acrylic on canvas. hehe…

Basically, in this series of ‘Trees, in the Round,’ “…multiple shots of each tree were taken while walking in a circle around it, then blended it together, and reworked to discover what become of the orbit - the tree and its environment in the round.”

What a smart guy! and creative!
I feel that his photographs look like paintings lol.

Matroyshka on Wood!

When I bought this wood, I already have in mind what I want to draw, the cute Matroyshka Doll!
The dimension of the wood panel matches perfectly with the placement of the nesting dolls.
I was so excited to start this mini project which I wanted to do for months.
A little disappointed with the shadow placement, so messy, but nevermind haha…

When researching on matroyshka doll, I get to know interesting facts about it.
Will share some facts from wikipedia here:
-The first Russian nested doll set was carved in 1890 by Vasily Zvyozdochkin from a design by Sergey Malyutin, who was a folk crafts painter at Abramtsevo.
-Zvyozdochkin and Malyutin were inspired by a doll (daruma doll) from Honshu, the main island of Japan.
-Savva Mamontov’s wife presented the dolls at the Exposition Universelle (1900) in Paris, where the toy earned a bronze medal. Soon after, matryoshka dolls were being made in several places in Russia and shipped around the world.

My bed is really not interesting to draw, so I drew the layout of my bedroom instead. Well, the wardrobe is a little too big and the door is too small, so out of proportion lol!

I’m not so sure what to draw for the EDM No.06 Draw your favourite well-loved object… or a childhood toy. Let me think >.<

Tiong Bahru Sketchwalk with the Urban Sketchers Singapore

Tiong Bahru Estate was built in 1930s and is one of the oldest housing estates in Singapore. This shop-house architecture has an eclectic styles of Streamline Moderne and local Straits Settlements. The flats feature rounded balconies, flat rooftops, spiral staircases, light wells and underground storage and shelters. One notable feature of Tiong Bahru estate is that all its streets are named after Chinese pioneers of the 19th and early 20th centuries (Lim Liak, Kim Pong, Guan Chuan, Chay Yan, etc.).

Penguins!

My mom and youngest brother came to Singapore back in June. We went to Jurong Bird Park, and since we were walking around in a rush, I’ve decided to just sketch in lines. How cute penguins are! I wish I can be like them, stoning most of the time. Walk a few step, look up, and stone. Haha! So adorable!
